Kiana and Kittens

Taming of a "hard" stray

Almost 2 years ago my cat Roy ran out of my house and wasn't seen again. Part of my attempts to find him involved putting food out to try to attract him back. It didn't attract him but it attracted a few other animals. One of these was a little grey/brown tabby. She started coming around within the first few months I had the food out and I never saw her with kittens.  I also saw her defer to another cat at the food bowl and now I put it all together an realized that this is not a cat born in the wild - this is probably a lost or abandoned cat. So I set about finding her a home - I found a wonderful woman who is willing to give her a chance. So now I have to catch this cat and then retame her so she can be a house cat.  I have started this blog as a way to let the lady who will adopt her know how the taming is coming along - it is easier than sending emails. When I did research on how to retame cats I got a lot of files and hints and tips, but no first person accounts. It would be nice to see what other people went through so I can compare and say "oh that is perfectly normal". So I thought I would start one for that purpose and hopefully help someone else who is thinking about retaming a stray.

I named the cat Kiana - because I couldn't just call her "the cat" - and caught her July 5th. I didn't think to start this blog until July 13th so while all the information is correct it might not be posted on the correct date it happened. But the first week and a half didn't have too much taming happening.

She is not going to be an easy cat to tame - she has had some bad experiences and doesn't have much reason to trust people. Half of one ear is missing - it looks healed so it must have happened a while back but that can't have helped. I am trying to let her regain her trust in humans.
